Uses

Generic Name: codeine (KOE deen)

Codeine is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain medicines. Codeine is used to treat mild to moderate pain. Codeine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Directions

Take codeine exactly as prescribed. Never take codeine in larger amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

Take this medicine with a full glass of water.

Drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily to help prevent constipation while you are taking codeine. Do not use a stool softener (laxative) without first asking your doctor.

Take codeine with food or milk if it upsets your stomach. Do not stop using codeine suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when you stop using codeine.

Side effects

Although side effects from codeine are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, upset stomach, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, difficulty urinating.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: difficulty breathing, rash or itching, ringing in the ears or decreased hearing, abnormal bruising or bleeding.

Precautions

Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other pain relievers, anticoagulants, antidepressants, corticosteroids, MAO inhibitors, medications for cough, cold, or allergies, medications for diabetes, arthritis, or gout, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers and vitamins.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had a bleeding disorder, ulcer disease, liver or kidney disease, a history of alcoholism, anemia, lung or thyroid disease, prostatic hypertrophy, or urinary problems.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking codeine, call your doctor.
If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking codeine.
Codeine may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how codeine affects you.
Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by codeine.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you use, especially of: fluconazole, lithium, "water pills" (diuretics, e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), drugs for high blood pressure, ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, lisinopril), corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), NSAID (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen). Check all prescription and nonprescription medicine labels carefully since many contain pain relievers/fever reducers (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin) which are similar to this drug. Aspirin, as prescribed by your doctor for reasons such as heart attack or stroke prevention (usually these dosages are 81-325 mg per day), should be continued. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose of codeine is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dosage

Since this medicine is taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 - 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
